Cooper’s Hawks are extremely efficient predators in the Garden. Skillful hunters, flying at high speeds through wooded forest, they pursue song birds which make up their main food source. Over the past three years, a pair has nested in the Huntsville Botanical Garden and one of them can be seen at most any time on the Birding Trail. This male Cooper’s Hawk was hunting at the bird feeders outside the Visitor Center. His presence allowed for close viewing because he was concentrating on hunting the song birds at the feeders.
